My Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, I am passionate about creating a learning environment that promotes inclusive and acceptance, allowing the student to safely express themselves however they choose. As a teacher I will be one of the primary adult influences in a child’s life and it is important that I treat this role with care. Creating a safe learning environment that educates against issues including racism, homophobia, ableism and gender discrimination.

I have a particular interest in adopting a Universal Design for Learning that incorporates differentiation into each lesson. I enjoy working with SEN students to create a system of learning that is in line with their individual needs, this work is something I would like to explore and develop throughout my career in order to ensure each student is given the tools and help they need to access their education.

I want to integrate teaching and learning methods that cater to multiple learning styles.

I teach in line with Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligence's, which focuses on intelligence as a "combination of heritable potentials and skills that can be developed in diverse ways"  through a range of experiences. (Gardner, 1983)  I believe that there should be equity in education that allows each student accessibility to their education.

Within my classes I want to encourage students critical thinking skills and create a space where they can express their curiosity and question those around them without fear of judgement. I will make it clear that as a teacher I will be a lifelong learner and will embrace opportunities to further grow my ability as a teacher.

I will act primarily as a facilitator of learning, creating a student cantered leaning environment through integration of peer and self-assessment. Students should not only be viewed as receptors of content, but as individuals who influence and share ideas with each other in the classroom.

During my time in secondary school my passion for art was encouraged by my art teacher and I wish to instill that same passion and support in my own students, teaching that art is a method of communication above all else. I plan to do this by incorporating cross curricular and cross disciplinary practice into my lessons. I also aim to embrace the contemporary side of art, leaning into the cultural context of today's world in an innovative way through use of digital media and references that engage students in their learning, as this is something that I integrate into my own practice as an artist.
